OK composition students - here is a thought-provoking article from the NY Times on the current state of new music:
The end of dogma
I would like all of you to read this and consider the implications of how this is shaping the new music community. How do you see this impacting California music, as opposed to the scene in New York? How do you see this impacting your own musical style and approach?

Spring Board: What are you up to?
With spring in full swing I was curious to see what we are all up to these days. What are you working on and what composers currently interest you?
Working on:
Wrapping up my percussion work "Collapse" for 6 percussionists + solo multi-percussion. For this piece I looked to the music of Elliot Carter, Lynn Glassock, John Cage, Edgard Varese, Steven Stucky, Peter Schickele, Dave Hollinden and Iannis Xenakis for inspiration. Next up will be a tango for guitar and soprano.
Currently listening to: Astor Piazzolla - Histoire Du Tango

Keyboard Concert Series: Joyce Yang

The upcoming Phillip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concert will be featuring Van Cliburn winner Joyce Yang! This is of special interest to composers here in Fresno, as not only is she a world-class pianist, but she will also be performing the works of two contemporary composers - Lowell Liebermann and Carl Vine.
More information about the concert can be found on the CSU Fresno Music department website (http://www.csufresno.edu/music).
Music students: if you attend the concert, please feel free to post your opinions of the concert here.
